Lake Shafer is one of two manmade lakes in the Monticello area.  Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman comprise what is known as the "twin lakes".  Lake Shafer is know for its record-size black bass and hybrid bass.  Lake Shafer covers approximately 1400 acres, and the lake has a maximum water depth of 30 feet. On the lake are the Norway and Oakdale hydroelectric dams.

There are two reputable boat rental shops on the Lake.  Shafer Shores has Pontoons and Wave runners for rent.  Lake Shafer Boat Rentals, just a block away from Pirates Cove Resort, has ski boats, pontoons, and wave runners for rent.  Both establishments can gas up your personal watercraft as well.  Multiple launch ramps are available nearby Pirates Cove Resort for personal watercraft.  Water-skiing and tubing are common on the lake.  There is an idle law after dusk.

Fish on Lake Shafer include bass, wipers, catfish, carp, crappies, bluegills and muskie.  Many guests fish directly off the docks at Pirates Cove Resort.  Some bring their own Bass boats and search out the fish from one of the many coves on the lake.  There's a bait shop just off the back of our property.  You can always swim in the Pirates Cove Resort pool which is heated and maintained at the proper chemical balance for the state laws, rules, and regulations.

Swimming is also available in Indiana Beach along Lake Shafer.

White County is named after Colonel Isaac White, one of the fallen heroes in the historic Battle of Tippecanoe. The battle took place just a few miles south of Monticello.

The Indiana Beach campground which borders Pirates Cove Resort, has water slides, mini-golf, an arcade, batting cages, and a very original bank-shot basketball game.  Also in town are 2 different go-cart racing courses, one of which is walking distance from Pirates Cove Resort.   Wolf Park is south of Monticello. The park offers weekend visitors an opportunity to observe how wolves and bison live. On Sundays there are live demonstrations of predator-prey interaction.
The amusement park Indiana Beach, on Lake Shafer, has more than 45 amusements, snack bars, games, arcade machines, restaurants, lounges with entertainment and dancing, water slides, and a ski show.  There are two new roller-coasters that rival those of marquee amusement parks around the country.  Other rides and games give Indiana Beach a clean carnival atmosphere.  Many people enjoy its unique location along the lakefront of Shafer.

Movies:  Monticello has very reasonable rates at their first-run movie theater.  There is also a Drive-In theater in town for the old-school.

Restaurants:  Seafood or steak is excellent at both Riverside and the Indiana Beach Skyroom restaurant.  There's plenty of fast food in town as well.

Night-life:  The Roof Garden Lounge at Indiana Beach is open late and has live bands throughout the summer.  Lake Freeman offers the Madam Carroll, the largest licensed Coast Guard approved inland watercraft in the State. The Madam Carroll offers live entertainment for dancing and listening pleasure.  Visit Beaver's Pub for great food and karaoke on Friday and Saturday Nights.

Golf: There are two golf courses in town.  Pine View is a public course that is fairly long and wide open.  Watch out for a few tough holes on the back nine.  Pine View also has a lighted Par 3 course that can be played day and night.  Tippecanoe Country Club is one of the state's finest courses and is available to the public as well.  There are a number of holes that share the shoreline of Lake Shafer.

Shopping:  There is a Kroger, Walmart, ACE hardware store, CVS, and many other common establishments in town.  Check out the downtown shops in Downtown Monticello.  The Summer Shop you will find trendy beachwear at Indiana Beach's Summer Shop.
